Community
Our store is a community center for music lovers, a safe place for the musically inclined to come and share our enthusiasms and obsessions without being judged or questioned. Too often vinyl collectors feel isolated in their daily lives, alone amongst coworkers, friends and family who view their interests and passions with disdain the occasional pathetic joke. We all need a place to belong.
Our listening stations, “recordmendations” sessions, coffee bar, store staff and customer base all encourage ease of exchange of musical knowledge and history, personal taste and original context and we are adept at adapting to all your needs. No style is unheard of, no niche so obscure, no guilty pleasure reviled. Feel free to feel free and just be.
Our customers are why we keep our doors open, not just because they help us to meet our expenses, but more importantly by ensuring that every visit to the store is special, by keeping an open mind and a warm attitude about what is around them, by sharing their knowledge and interests with others while learning from us and our kind. And with every interaction we have an opportunity to give thanks and express our gratitude.
DJ Culture
The influence of d.j. culture on our store goes beyond our listening stations and extensive selection of house, techno, hip hop and other styles of club music on twelve inch singles. We foster a digging ethic that encourages paying attention to labels, logos, producers, players, writers, remixers, studios and song titles as a path to preselection.
We insist on the needle drop, the two-to-four second stab of sound at the beginning, bridge and peak of each track on each side of every record preselected just in case, just to learn, maybe to say maybe, hopefully to cry out “YES!’, but usually just to mutter “no thanks, next.”
We highly recommend recommending and encourage encouraging, allowing customers and staff to point and enthuse and tell tales of who and when, of where that sample came from and which one you should also check out. These discussions often turn into associations, into new networks of friends and parties which converge every week on our store.
Listening Stations
Have you ever held a record in your hand, wondered what the music sounded like, then put it back reluctantly and spent the rest of the day worried you had missed out on something? And what about that scratch that looks like it will tick or is it just a scuff and what about that shine and many other questions we have when we find a copy of a record we know we like and have been looking for and now have to decide is this the one?
Enter the listening station, a modern solution to a postmodern problem, “Is this good enough?” Rather than sitting and waiting and wondering, you can take action. Will you like it? Listen to it! It is easy as dropping the needle. Hidden faults are revealed, mysterious marks explained, the joy or the sorrow of the music may bend or mend your heart, may stir your soul or leave you cold, but at least you will know.
We have three quality individual sound systems where everyone is welcome to sit and explore. All we ask is that you treat our goods with care, leave room for others as necessary, refile your records when able or leave that for the professionals to do. After all it is our job!
